According to foreign media reports, data from Counterpoint Research, a market research company, shows that Samsung has surpassed Apple to become the third largest manufacturer in the global mobile processing market.
The report released by the agency shows that the top five smartphone SoC brands (in order of ranking) include: Qualcomm, MediaTek, Samsung, Apple, and Huawei.
According to data from Counterpoint Research, Samsung’s share of the global mobile processor market was 14.1% in 2019, an increase of 2.2% from 2018, ranking third. Apple, which was squeezed into fourth place, had a market share of 13.1%, which was 0.5% lower than in 2018. The top two places are Qualcomm and MediaTek, with market shares of 33.4% and 24.6% respectively.
Samsung’s growth is due to the large number of smartphones released last year. The Galaxy M and A series phones are very cost-effective and have sold millions in Asia and Europe. In addition, Samsung’s Galaxy and Note series also contributed a large number of Samsung Exynos series chips.
Samsung’s recently released smartphones Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra all use System LSI’s latest high-end chipset Exynos990. Although Samsung also has smartphones with Snapdragon 865 chips, they are only sold in China, South Korea and the United States.
The report pointed out that Samsung’s market share increase is due to its continuous increase in sales in North America and India. Ironically, consumers are not very satisfied with Samsung’s Exynos processor, so much so that the Change website is conducting a petition urging Samsung to stop using Exynos processors in Galaxy flagship smartphones (outside the US). At present, nearly 20,000 people have signed the petition.
Currently, Qualcomm’s latest mobile processor is the Snapdragon 865, which is used in most Android flagship smartphones. Some reports suggest that Qualcomm will update the Snapdragon 865 and release the Snapdragon 865+ in the third quarter of this year.
In addition, the report shows that among the top five smartphone SoC brands, only Samsung and Huawei have seen growth.
